Annual REport
Our Mission
WHAT WE DO:
Catholic Campus Ministry strives to make God known on William & Mary's campus guided, inspired, and directed by the teachings of Christ and His Holy Catholic Church.
HOW WE DO IT:
-
INVITE STUDENTS into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church,
-
FORM DISCIPLES of Christ through worship, works of mercy, theological scholarship, and authentic friendship,
-
EQUIP LEADERS for the mission of transforming the culture,
through weekly opportunities for worship, service, community, and faith formation.
WHO WE SERVE:
Catholic Campus Ministry exists to serve the students, faculty, and staff of the College of William & Mary. Our broader ministry community also includes our permanent community, parents, and alumni.
We seek to be a welcoming community, open to persons of all backgrounds.

PROGRAMS
Worship
Three Sunday Masses and at least one weekday Mass are offered each day of the week. 80 hours of Eucharistic Adoration are available each week, including a student Holy Hour with Night Prayer, weekly Rosary group, and monthly Praise & Worship nights.
Community Life
Weekly Sunday Suppers serve as a gathering point for the Catholic community. Monthly social events provide an environment for forming lifelong friendships. Ecumenical events encourage fellowship and dialogue between students of diverse religious backgrounds.
Faith Formation
Seven weekly small-group Bible studies offer the opportunity to form community and grow in the faith. Weekly "Catholicism 101" nights provide Catechesis on scripture and other faith-related topics. Semesterly Lecture Series speakers on a variety of topics.
Vocational Discernment
Men's and Women's Vocational Discernment groups provide the environment for students to explore what it is that God is calling them to in their lives, whether it be priesthood, religious life, a generous single life, or marriage, and practical tools for pursuing that vocation.
Service & Justice
Students serve in the local community and beyond through monthly service projects, fundraising for local charities, and four annual mission trips. A study group looks at applications of Catholic Social Teaching to the issues of our day, and the Tribe For Life organization serves as a vehicle for educating and advocating for human-life related issues.
Programspotlight:
SMALL GROUPS
CCM Small Groups are small faith-sharing communities led by upperclassmen who have committed to welcoming and sharing the faith with younger students. Six small groups, each with five to ten men or women, meet weekly to study the scriptures, pray for one another, and share in the joys and challenges of campus life. At the heart of each small group is a desire to learn and grow in faith together. Students come as they are, and challenge one another toward greater faith and virtue.
"For me, attending Small Group began as something that I felt like I should do, but quickly became something I looked forward to every week. Who knew just an hour a week could mold a small, caring family within the larger community of CCM? Nothing is more validating than when others understand where you are coming from and can offer advice, support, and prayers, regardless of whether it has been a good or bad week. This small support system that God has provided and nurtured has allowed me to open up and has brought me closer to Him."

In Their Words:
Matt Rutkowski
class of 2021
CCM has really become part of what I think of as my family at William and Mary. There is no other organization I am part of here that welcomes, supports, and encourages me like CCM does. I am incredibly thankful for all the relationships I've had the chance to build and the opportunities I've had the chance to take with CCM over the last few years, and I'm looking forward to becoming even more involved with CCM's community next year as a senior.
Elli Davis
class of 2023
Walking onto William & Mary’s campus almost three months ago, I was far from home, I did not know anyone, and I felt as though I would never find my place. It was not until I walked through the doors at CCM that I finally felt welcome, supported, and, most importantly, loved. Having the opportunity to develop deep friendships with the people at CCM has led me further towards Christ in more ways than I ever though possible. CCM has welcomed me with open arms and provided a home for me when I needed it most.
Alex Jimenez
class of 2016
CCM played a big role in my discernment process to enter seminary. It gave me close friends whom I could talk to and share the journey with. It also gave me the perfect opportunities to explore a possible vocation to the priesthood, like diocesan-sponsored retreats, conferences, and men’s small group. Overall, however, CCM just gave me a solid community that encouraged me in an authentic way to grow in my relationship with the Lord.
FACILITIES
This beautiful chapel, originally built in 1932 as the Catholic College Chapel, in 1939 dedicated as St. Bede Catholic Church, in 2003 named the CCM Chapel, was finally recognized in 2015 as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. In January 2020, a full interior renovation began. It will return to use in Fall 2020 as a healthier, safer, more comfortable, and more beautiful place to worship.
The CCM Student Center encompasses approximately 2,500 square feet on the basement level of the St. John XXIII Center, a building the ministry shares with the Williamsburg House of Mercy, St. Bede's outreach ministry in Williamsburg. It includes staff offices, a student lounge space, and a library/meeting room for student programs.
Annual
FISCAL
REPORT
July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019
The financial state of Catholic Campus Ministry at William & Mary remained strong through Fiscal Year 2019 and into 2020. In FY 2019, the ministry retained a significant surplus, due largely to a year-long vacancy on the CCM staff which caused expenses to come in under budget. Modest increases in the number of total donors supporting CCM and the number of monthly supporters have contributed to greater stability and predictability of cash flow.

Continuing the legacy
Celebrating 100 years of Catholic Campus Ministry, and
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
1923-2023
In 1923, a small handful of William & Mary students, along with Professor Carlos Castañeda founded the Gibbons Club - the first official Catholic organization at William & Mary. Within a decade of the Club's founding, a chapel had been constructed, and a permanent Catholic presence established. While the name has changed a few times over the past century, and the ministry methods have evolved to meet the needs of each generation, the mission has remained the same: to make God known on the campus of William & Mary.
As we look toward the 100th Anniversary of Catholic Campus Ministry at William & Mary, we know that God continues to have big plans for this ministry, and we trust in His generous providence. At the core of our mission are the values of BELONGING, DISCIPLESHIP, and LEADERSHIP. As we look to the future, two significant goals have emerged, which we believe will serve to carry forward these three values.
FOCUS
We would like to partner with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) to bring a team of four post-college campus missionaries to serve at William & Mary. FOCUS was founded over twenty years ago and currently serves at 172 locations with mentorship, discipleship, and leadership formation.
FACILITY
IMPROVEMENT
As our ministry grows, we continue to find ourselves at a lack for adequate space for catechetical programming, social space, study space, and offices. We would like to address this, either through the purchase of a building in close proximity to campus and the Shrine to serve as a ministry center, construction of a new ministry center, or full renovation of our current space to meet the needs of tomorrow.
